How true to life is Simulcation Datacenter?

When it comes to making decisions about hardware and services, you need as much information as possible to hand. However, with the amount of choice on offer, where do you turn?

Simulations allow us to deal with virtual versions of real life scenarios, empowering the user to rehearse and innovate through practice. I’m proud to steer the creative direction of a very diverse team that brings together professionals from the worlds of gaming, IT, professional education and simulation. What’s more, it draws on our experience with popular simulation titles (such as Sim City and The Sims to create an environment that will keep users coming back for more. Through Simulcation Datacenter, users can challenge their skills, learn about new technological developments, and experience the competitive thrill of expanding their virtual market share.

Translating reality into simulation

Underpinning all of this is a host of data about the variables at play when constructing and optimizing datacenters. Simulcation Datacenter is designed to virtually mimic real world scenarios. Choose from a range of real life components from well-known manufacturers (such as IBM, Cisco, and others) to populate your virtual datacenter, with the option to click through to find out more from the manufacturer about the specific component. You’ll be able to experience virtual ordering, installation, productivity and servicing information – everything you’d need to apply your learned skills in the real world. It also uses a fictional currency, so you can balance the CAPEX and OPEX of your virtual company. By simulating the parameters that impact datacenter decision makers in real life, Simulcation Datacenter is a powerful tool for experimentation and learning. Not only will you manage a datacenter, you’ll also be looking after the health of an entire virtual company.

Demonstrate your decisions

It’s the feature I’m most proud of as COO of Simulcation: the detail behind the simulation. We know that datacenter managers are always being challenged to prove the return on investment behind their decisions. By simulating the decision making process with realistic variables, we hope that you’ll eventually be able to demonstrate the value of your choices to senior management, for instance. Interested in partnering with a new provider? By test-driving their products in your virtual datacenter, you’ll see whether you should translate that decision to your role in real life.

Through simulation, we hope to remove some of the decision fatigue, increase transparency for datacenter managers, and allow you to experiment in a safe environment – all in a way that’s fun and engaging to use. Interested in experiencing it? You can preregister for an account now.

Gamification in 2017 – so what now?

Coined first in 2002 and then popularized in 2010, ‘gamification’ has been steadily on the rise ever since. Used to define the way developers were incorporating social and reward techniques from gaming into other types of software, it caught the eye of venture capitalists the world over and was reportedly mentioned in half of presentations by software application companies seeking funding. So, nearly a decade on, where are we now? Where has gamification taken us, and where will it go next? A short past One of the organizers of the first conference on gamification, Gabe Zichermann , predicted: ‘in a gamified future, I don’t think many companies, including the government, will be able to avoid becoming part of this trend. I think consumers will increasingly expect and demand that experiences become more fun and engaging. We can never ever go backward. People’s expectations have been reset. This will be the new normal.’ Gamification as a conscious technique has b

Simulcation Datacenter launching to selected IBM employees and Business Partners

I’m very proud to announce that Simulcation Datacenter will launch this Wednesday May 17 th at an IBM TSS education event in Radolfzell, Germany. It marks the culmination of all our efforts as a team, and I couldn’t be more excited to see the first users create their own virtual datacenters. It’s been a long road that’s brought together an incredibly diverse team, in close collaboration with our partners IBM. The first users will be a small group of IBM employees and Business Partners who will experience a sneak peek at our technology before we go on to roll it out to more Business Partners and – later this year – the general public. It’s all part of our ambition to transform professional education for datacenter managers and IT staff, allowing them to safely model their complex purchasing decisions to find the right mix of hardware, software and services, whilst also having fun. Learning doesn’t have to be laborious, and technology has advanced to the point where we’re a

For the win: Why gamification and game-based learning are the future

A quick google of the terms ‘gamification’ and ‘game-based learning’ turns up a surprising lack of clarity about what these terms mean – and, crucially, whether they work. They’re real buzzwords of the moment, and share the common ground of implementing the mechanics of ‘gaming’ to enhance learning, or encourage changes in behavior. Used in everything from marketing strategy to HR policies, various studies have shown the benefits of using ‘gamified systems’. IT staff are perhaps closer than most to the technology that’s shaping how game design and game interaction is revolutionizing professional education. So, what is it, and can these concepts help to cut through some of the current problems with learning new systems and processes for datacenter managers and CIOs? What’s the difference between gamification and game-based learning?   ‘Gamification is using game-based mechanics, aesthetics, and game-thinking to engage people, motivate action, promote learning, and solve
